How to replace your engine air filter
A clean air filter keeps dirt out of your engine. On most cars it takes no tools and a few minutes.
5–10 minutesEasySaves $30–60 vs. a shop
What you need
- The correct air filter for your car
- Sometimes a screwdriver or 10 mm socket
Steps
- Open the hood and find the air box: the large plastic box connected to the intake hose.
- Release the clips or screws holding the lid.
- Lift out the old filter and note which way it sits.
- Wipe any leaves or dirt out of the box with a rag (don't let debris fall into the intake).
- Drop in the new filter the same way, close the lid and refasten every clip.
Tips: Hold the old filter up to a light: if you can't see light through it, it was overdue. Replace it more often if you drive on dirt or gravel roads.
