How to change your car's oil

An oil change is the easiest money-saving job you can do yourself. You need the right oil, the right filter and about half an hour.

30–45 minutesEasySaves $40–80 vs. a shop

What you need

  • The oil grade and quantity for your car (look it up on PartSpec)
  • A new oil filter and drain plug gasket
  • Wrench or socket for the drain plug
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Drain pan, funnel, gloves and rags
  • Ramps or a jack and jack stands, if you need clearance

Steps

  1. Run the engine for 2–3 minutes so the oil flows easily, then park on level ground and turn the engine off.
  2. If you need to lift the car, use ramps or jack stands. Never work under a car held up only by a jack.
  3. Put the drain pan under the drain plug, loosen it with your wrench, then unscrew it by hand and let the oil drain for about 10 minutes.
  4. Wipe the drain plug, fit a new gasket or washer, and reinstall it. Snug it to the torque in your manual; don't overtighten.
  5. Move the pan under the oil filter and unscrew it (cartridge filters sit in a housing on top of the engine and need a cap wrench).
  6. Wipe the filter mount, rub a little new oil on the new filter's rubber gasket, and screw it on hand-tight plus about a quarter turn.
  7. Pour in about half a quart less than your car's capacity, wait a minute, then check the dipstick and top up to the full mark.
  8. Start the engine for 30 seconds, check for leaks under the car, shut it off, and recheck the level.
  9. Reset the oil-life reminder, and take the old oil and filter to any auto parts store for free recycling.
Tips: Write the date and mileage on a sticker on the windshield, or save your car to My Garage. Use the exact grade and approval on your oil cap or in your manual; it matters for newer engines.
