Electric car maintenance basics
Electric cars skip oil changes, spark plugs and timing belts, but they still need a few things done on schedule.
VariesEasyEVs cost about half as much to maintain
What you need
- Tire pressure gauge
- Cabin air filter and wiper blades for your EV
Steps
- Rotate tires on schedule (often every 6,000–7,500 miles). EVs are heavy and wear tires faster than gas cars.
- Check tire pressure monthly against the door-jamb sticker.
- Replace the cabin air filter about every 1–2 years.
- Have the brake fluid tested every 2–4 years, and calipers cleaned and lubed yearly if you live where roads are salted.
- Keep the battery between about 20% and 80% for daily driving, and charge to 100% only before long trips (unless your maker says otherwise for LFP batteries).
- Have the 12V battery tested after about 3 years: if it fails, the car won't wake up.
Tips: Look for EV-rated tires when it's time to replace them; they handle the weight and are quieter.
